The surgeon controls the robotic arm using a foot pedal that allows for intuitive manipulation of the instruments. This setup enhances precision and control, enabling surgeons to perform delicate tasks with greater accuracy compared with traditional methods. The image-based approach of the robot allows for better navigation of complex anatomy, helping surgeons make informed decisions throughout the surgery.

For instance, when a patient needs a knee replacement, they will first undergo a CT scan. The resulting scan images are then uploaded to Monogram’s cloud-based software. An AI-driven tool processes these data in just 30 seconds and generates the precise information required for the surgery. Once processed, the robot retrieves the data from the cloud, enabling the surgeon to begin.

Where Precision meets Speed

One of the key advantages of Monogram’s mBôs TKA System is its ability to compete with the duration of traditional manual surgeries, addressing a common challenge faced by many robotic systems.

The mBôs TKA System aims to reduce the time discrepancy between robotic and manual procedures in orthopedics. For example, the bone registration process is designed to be quick and user-friendly, taking only one minute compared to other systems that take five to twelve minutes.

“Our mBôs TKA System streamlines the operating process by assisting with bone registration and guiding the surgical procedure from the outset, ensuring a smooth and efficient experience for the surgeons,” says Shamaei.

In its vision, less time on the table reflects more time for recovery, creating a win-win for both patients and healthcare providers. Orthopedic Overhaul—Monogram’s Game-changing Efforts

Monogram’s mBôs TKA System is engineered to handle a wide range of orthopedic procedures, setting it apart from Stryker’s Mako system, which is specifically designed only for knee replacement. The robot’s versatility and single-platform-multi-application design allow for rapid adaptation to new applications, enhancing its utility across various procedures.

Creating a dedicated robot for each specific application demands a significant budget and a lengthy timeline of four to five years. To address this challenge, Monogram has designed the mBôs TKA System to support multiple applications from the start. The company has already submitted its first application to the FDA and is actively developing additional applications and next-generation technologies.

Even before its official IPO, Monogram operated like a public entity by positioning itself as a crowdfunded company. The company remained seamless with the proactive effort to streamline its financial operations, accounting practices and overall organizational structure in preparation for the IPO. It recently reached a significant milestone by going public on NASDAQ in May 2023. Although the mBôs TKA System has not yet been commercially launched, it has already engaged 15 surgeons.



Monogram has also partnered with one of the largest hospital chains—renowned for performing the highest volume of knee replacements, handling around 16,000 cases annually—to scale its business. The collaboration will help Monogram in further clinical trials and explore future marketing opportunities.

Since its inception, Monogram has experienced remarkable growth, expanding from a small team of eight to over 27 employees. While it operates as a micro business compared to its competitors, who have billions in funding and hundreds of employees, Monogram’s achievements are remarkable, given the efficiency of its dedicated team and support from multiple investors.
