Mighty Oak is currently manufacturing various applications, including their flagship product FIREFLY, which is a personalized pre-surgical planning and navigation platform. FIREFLY, along with its 3D printed medical models and surgical guides, has obtained FDA clearance and CE-mark.
The goal of Mighty Oak's FIREFLY solution is to enhance precision and safety while addressing the efficiency challenges commonly encountered in spinal fusion surgery. It achieves this by providing surgeons with meticulous pre-surgical planning in 3D, using virtual renderings of patients' spines, accurate to the millimeter. Surgeons then utilize 3D printed anatomical models and disposable guides to perform procedures such as drilling, tapping, and placing pedicle screws, making spinal surgeries more successful and less stressful. With the implementation of HP's industrial Multi Jet Fusion technology, FIREFLY is now able to streamline the printing process and reduce turnaround time, enabling more patients to benefit from personalized care.

Leveraging 3D printed, patient-specific solutions has always been a cornerstone of their approach. Spinal fusion, a common treatment for spinal fractures, deformities, or instability, often involves the use of pedicle screws to provide additional strength and support. However, incorrect placement of these screws can lead to severe injuries, including spinal cord damage. While robotic solutions exist to mitigate the risks associated with manual pedicle screw insertion, they are costly and require extensive training. Leveraging their expertise in 3D printing technology, Mighty Oak developed the FIREFLY complete navigation system to streamline surgeons' workflow and reduce screw placement time.
Since incorporating HP's Jet Fusion 5200 printers directly into their factory, Mighty Oak Medical reports significant improvements in efficiency, while also enhancing replicability and consistency in pedicle screw placement, achieving an accuracy rate of 99.7%. These patient-specific guides eliminate intra-operative radiation exposure for both surgical staff and patients, as well as the associated maintenance and technician costs found in other solutions.
